Law Student Caryn Davies Earns Gold in Women's Eight Rowing

Three-time Olympian Caryn Davies (LAW’13) added to her collection of medals this morning in London when her U.S. rowing team won the women’s eight. This is Davies’ second gold medal and third medal overall—the team captured gold in the women’s eight in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in Athens in 2004.

Davies and her teammates, five-time world champions, were expected to once again dominate the event, having set the world record in the women’s eight earlier this year at the Samsung World Rowing Cup II. And they did not disappoint. The team crossed the finish line in 6:10.59 ahead of the Canadians (6:12.06), the silver medalists, and the Dutch (6:13.12), who took bronze.

Coach Tom Terhaar, who has seen this women's eight team to six consecutive world titles and all their Olympic medals, has also lent his expertise to Columbia, where he coached the men's lightweight program for five years in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Davies, who rowed at Harvard, enrolled in Columbia Law School three years ago, but postponed her studies to train and qualify for the London games. “I had never really decided to retire,” Davies told the "Los Angeles Times" last month. “It was always in the back of my mind that I would like to row in 2012.”
