Afghanistan—Realities and the Road Ahead

The Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS), Columbia University, presents, "Afghanistan: Realities and the Road Ahead," with professors Fotini Christia, Austin Long and Abraham Wagner.

In November 2001, the United States had essentially accomplished its goal of overthrowing the Taliban regime that harbored al Qaeda. Eight years later, the United States finds itself at a strategic crossroads, facing a resurgent Taliban insurgency that retains links to al Qaeda. This panel presents views on the current situation and possible directions for U.S. policy.

The South Asia Institute (SAI) presents a talk by Farzana Shaikh, Royal Institute of International Affairs titled, "Identity, Ethnicity and Democracy: The Case of Pakistan."

Farzana Shaikh is an Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London. She was a Scholar in Residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 2006-07, and has lectured on Pakistan and Islam in South Asia at universities throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. She is the author of Making Sense of Pakistan and Community and Consensus in Islam: Muslim Representation in Colonial India, 1860-1947.

The School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) presents a lecture entitled "Pakistan's Transition to Democracy: Militancy and Future Relations with the United States," with Saeed Shafqat, professor and director of the Centre for Public Policy and Governance at the Forman Christian University in Lahore, Pakistan and adjunct professor of International and Public Affairs at SIPA.
 
Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rethink Afghanistan—A Panel of Columbia Afghanistan Veterans

Join members of the U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University and professor Austin Long for a screening of the documentary “Rethink Afghanistan” followed by a panel discussion of the film with student veterans who have served in Afghanistan.

The Middle East Institute (MEI) presents a talk entitled, "Afghanistan and the West after Eight Years: Which War Are We Fighting?" with Dr. Reinhard Erös.

Dr. Reinhard Erös was Colonel in the Medical Corps of the German Army and lectured on Intercultural Competence and national and international military academics. For the last twenty years, he has been operating on a personal basis on behalf of Afghanistan. In 1998, he and his wife founded "German Aid for Afghan Children." Since then, they have built sixteen schools in the remote mountain areas of Tora Bora. His latest book: Under Taliban, Warloards and Drug Barons will be available in English.

The Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS) presents, “Strategy Serving Tactics: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the New Way of American Warfare,” with Colonels David Gray and Gian Gentile.

Two serving Army Colonels will talk about their recent combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan and provide their assessment of the problems with the current American approach to Afghanistan.
