Since 2007, Columbia has hosted more than 300 Amgen Scholars in the university’s science research labs. They undertake research projects under the guidance of Columbia faculty in the fields of bioengineering and biomedical sciences.

Professor Vunjak-Novakovic is a pioneer in the engineering of functional human tissue for use in regenerative medicine. Her work has led to new approaches for treating injuries and complex diseases and also have supported the development and evaluation of therapeutic drugs.

Elizabeth Hillman, associate professor of biomedical engineering, leads a team that is developing new imaging methods for the living brain.
