Making Beautiful, Hip Music Together – but Only for 4 Years

Freshman orientation, 2011. Steven Bennett was playing cello in his dorm room on the 15th floor of John Jay Hall when he heard a knock on his door. When he opened it, another student with a broad grin exclaimed, “Cello!”

Nathan Chan, himself a cellist whose room was one floor below, had rushed upstairs when he heard Bennett practicing, eager to meet a like-minded classmate. Over the next few weeks, Bennett and Chan met three other talented cellists, all in the class of 2015, who became fast friends.

“We started playing together, mostly messing around late at night when we were all free,” said Corinna Boylan, a music and business major. “We would be in the John Jay lounge, improvising and practicing, and people would wander in to listen to us. So we said, 'What if we made this something more legitimate, more special, and we could share it with even more people?'\"
