Columbia UnTapped, which is the University’s only tap dance ensemble, was formed in September 2015. The club aims to enrich campus culture through the art of tap.

UnTapped’s Mission

“We are dedicated to carrying the deeply rooted tradition of tap dance forward,” said Kaiden Currie, UnTapped president and a Columbia College junior, as well as an 11-time World Tap Champion. “As one of the few no-cut groups catering to all levels, we aim to share our love and joy of tap with everyone! In my role at UnTapped, I direct our showcases, choreograph, and supervise the overall operations and programming of the group.”

Who Can Join

No experience is required. Beginners are more than welcome. UnTapped offers classes that start with the basics, and tap shoes aren’t necessary (sneakers or socks work just fine). The group is intentionally inclusive, with members ranging from experienced dancers to novices. There are no formal auditions or cuts for performances, as the goal is to create a welcoming space for anyone interested in tap.

Classes and Rehearsals

UnTapped meets weekly on Sundays, 12-3 pm, on campus, typically in Lerner 477 or 478. The group hosts open classes, with zero commitment. You can show up, dance for an hour, and be on your way. UnTapped also produces two showcases each year (one in the fall, and one in the spring). If you choose to participate in a showcase, rehearsals are held during regular meeting times, when members learn and practice choreography together.

“UnTapped currently has around 60 members participating in its showcase,” said Currie. “Throughout this academic year, we’ve hosted over 150 students in our classes, from Columbia College, Columbia Engineering, and Barnard, to School of General Studies, Teachers College, and the Medical Center.”

Why You Should Sign Up

Students should join UnTapped to be part of a welcoming, low-pressure dance community, where they can learn tap or continue developing their skills regardless of experience level. Members have the opportunity to perform in student-led shows, explore creativity through choreography, and build meaningful friendships across campus.

“Beyond dancing, UnTapped truly feels like a family, and our rehearsals are always a great time,” said Currie. “We also host bonding activities throughout the year, creating plenty of opportunities to connect with other students. UnTapped is unlike any other group on campus, and, at the end of the day, it’s just fun to tap dance. Why not learn a new skill?”
