Astronomers, students, and space-loving New Yorkers gathered in Columbia’s Havemeyer Hall to view some of the highest-definition photos ever taken of the cosmos. The event — co-sponsored by Columbia, the City University of New York, Rutgers University, and Schmidt Sciences — celebrated the release of new images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which was launched with the involvement of several Columbia faculty members. More spectacular photos are expected in the next decade as the observatory embarks on a new project: a 10-year recorded survey of billions of galaxies, which will create an ultra-high-definition time-lapse record of the Universe.
