At the McMurdo Station in Antarctica, researchers Marco Giometto and Adrian Brügger from Columbia Engineering and Indrani Das from Columbia Climate School's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory aim to measure and predict strong winds (known as katabatic winds), which sweep down from the continent's interior and reshape the snow, affecting the Antarctic Ice Sheet and global climate. These observations will help create a high-resolution numerical simulation model improving the accuracy of Antarctic surface mass predictions.
They weren't the only Columbia researchers recently in Antarctica. Learn about the researchers working on GAPS, an astroparticle physics balloon experiment on the hunt for dark matter.
