Recent Awards & Milestones

Tiffany Shaw, assistant professor of applied mathematics, has been awarded a Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, a prestigious honor given to a group of the most promising and innovative researchers who are at the beginning stages of their careers. Shaw, who has a joint appointment in Columbia’s Department of Earth and Environmental Science, is one of 16 fellows named who will each receive an unrestricted grant of $875,000, distributed over five years.

Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz, a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, has won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. And Alvin E. Roth, a Columbia Engineering alumni, won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics. 

Alvin E. Roth, who graduated from Columbia Engineering in 1971 and is currently the George Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration at Harvard, was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics for his pioneering work in the practical design of market institutions.

Five members of the Columbia University Medical Center community are among the newly elected members and associates of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine in the United States.

Robert J. Lefkowitz, M.D, Ph.D., an alumnus of Columbia College and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, has been awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 

Research on volcanic eruptions and on the structure of abstract graphs have resulted in two Columbia professors being named MacArthur Fellows, the “genius” awards given to individuals who have shown “extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits.” 

Columbia University Libraries and Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith are pleased to announce the establishment of a significant theater award, The Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, abbreviated as the EMK Prize.

Columbia to Award the 2012 Horwitz Prize to Richard Losick, Joe Lutkenhaus, and Lucy Shapiro for Discovering the Intracellular Structure of Bacterial Cells

Martin Chalfie, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Biological Sciences, was awarded the first Golden Goose Award, honoring basic science research that initially seems obscure but leads to findings with significant health and economic benefits. 

Michael Sheetz of Columbia University was named co-winner of this year’s Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for discoveries related to cytoskeletal motor proteins, agents that move cargo within cells, contract muscles, and enable cell movements.

Two Columbia professors have won prestigious Lasker Foundation Awards for their work in biological sciences.
