A Lecture by Ateş Altınordu, Sabancı University
Prof. Altınordu will examine the complex interplay of religion and nationalism in Turkey from the late Ottoman Empire to the present, including the rivalry between secular and religious nationalisms, the use of Muslimness as a marker of membership in the nation, the subjection of non-Muslim citizens to discrimination and violence, and the Islamic turn of the Kurdish political movement. Prof. Altınordu will conclude with a discussion of possible challenges to the impasse between secular and religious nationalisms in present-day Turkey.
