Online Event

The Data Science Institute in collaboration with the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, home to Columbia University’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), is now accepting pre-proposal submissions from clinical and translational research faculty at Columbia University to the Data Science Institute (DSI) Scholars Program. Our program’s unique enrichment activities foster a learning and collaborative community in data science at Columbia. This program aims to support faculty by engaging undergraduate and master students through the creation of data science research internships.  There are two formal cohorts each year in the Spring/Summer and Fall Semesters. During the 2021-2022 school year, we worked with 48 projects and received more than 530 student applications.

We are conducting this solicitation specifically for clinical and translational research faculty at Columbia who are looking for data science guidance on their projects, with DSI Scholars Program leadership and data science expertise. We include consultations at various levels:

  1. Refining the data science plan for your research project
  2. Finding a student who can undertake the data analytic aspects of your project
  3. Identifying the data science needs of your research idea/proposal (i.e., converting your research question into a data question)

Faculty members with research proposals/ideas at various stages (e.g., conceptual, refinement, and the analysis of existing datasets to answer an already-refined question) are encouraged to apply.

For further details on this pre-proposal solicitation, we will hold an information session on Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 2:00-2:45pm for all faculty who are interested in submitting a pre-proposal. During this session, attendees will hear about example projects from previous semesters, learn how to prepare their submission, and ask questions. A recording of the information session will be shared afterwards for those who are unable to attend.

Pre-proposals will be due Friday, June 10th, 2022 and must be submitted via the following form: Proposal form

For selected proposals seeking data science assistance (specified in their submission), the DSI Scholars Program will work with you to find a data science student who can help you solve your data needs. Selection will be made based on suitability for the mission of the Program, necessary skill level, and data science relevance. If not selected, there will be an opportunity to receive feedback, revise and resubmit in August.

For questions about the information session or the proposal submission form, you can contact [email protected] and check out the FAQ section.
