Recent News Brought a Little Spring to Columbia Students’ Steps

According to a very unscientific poll on Instagram, Columbians—or at least, we think they might be affiliated with the University—are looking forward to some exciting new improvements.

March may be coming in like a “lion” but for two days it brought a taste of “lamb-like” 70-degree weather and ... a new gym.

In case you were too busy studying for midterms this week, Acting President Claire Shipman and Provost Angela Olinto sent out a letter announcing major new improvements in the undergraduate student experience, including a new fitness center, expanded dining options, more student spaces, increased teaching and advising resources, and additional well-being facilities. This news was all part of an effort to enhance the student experience.

“These commitments,” Shipman and Olinto wrote in a University-wide message, “will strengthen both the academic and day-to-day experience of our students” and improve the “undergraduate experience at Columbia in the near term and lay the groundwork for future investment in coming years.”

At Columbia News, we could feel the exhilaration in the air, though maybe it was just the nice weather that brought everyone outside to play and picnic on the lawns and chat with friends on Low steps. So we conducted a very formal and scientific poll on Instagram to see what people were most excited about. Take a look.

And in the meantime, we hope everyone is enjoying their spring break!
