Columbia University celebrates the opening of The Startup Lab. President Lee C. Bollinger thanks the Dean of Columbia College James Valentini, the Dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Business Glenn Hubbard, the Dean of Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science Mary Boyce, the Dean of SIPA Merit Janow, as well as the head of Columbia Entrepreneurship Richard Witten for coming together and establishing a unique partnership to open the Lab. Forty five teams of recent Columbia graduates will begin working there in the nearest future.

Thomas Jessell, PhD, the Claire Tow Professor of Motor Neuron Disorders in the Departments of Neuroscience and of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University, is the recipient of the 2014 Neuroscience Prize of The Gruber Foundation. 

The David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation has awarded its 2014-2015 “Magic Grants” to eight teams of students, faculty, alumni and post-docs from Columbia and Stanford Universities.

Three Columbia professors have been named members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Election to NAS, in recognition of "distinguished and continuing achievements in original research," is considered one of the highest honors a scientist or engineer can receive.

Nobel Laureate Richard Axel, MD, University Professor, has been elected to the Royal Society as a foreign member.

Laurence Abbott, PhD, the William Bloor Professor of Neuroscience, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

Maintaining Public Safety’s files, keeping attendance records and scheduling conferences are just part of Mary Dooley’s job.

Several full-time and adjunct professors at Columbia and Barnard, in disciplines ranging from dance to history to writing, were awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships for 2014, based on their distinguished achievement and exceptional future promise.

Columbia announced today the 31 teams that have been selected to join the Columbia Startup Lab, one of a growing number of university initiatives engaged with New York City’s burgeoning startup sector and dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial talent. 

W. Ian Lipkin, MD, John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and director of the school’s Center for Infection and Immunity, was named recipient of Villanova University’s 2014 Mendel Medal.
