Congratulations to Professor Michael Woodford, who won a Nobel Prize in Economics this week! Celebrated by family, friends, students, colleagues, and fellow Columbia Nobel laureates Martin Chalfie and Joseph Stiglitz, Woodford had an important group to thank. “A number of students of mine are here,” Woodford said with a smile. “A lot of what I have done has only been possible thanks to my students, because it was hard for me to work these things out except by trying to explain them to people and having students who are willing to put up with that. It is essential to the intellectual process, at least in my case. I’ve been gratified that many went on to have distinguished careers and I hope I have some responsibility for that, but, really, I’m grateful just to have had them as students. That’s really been essential to me.”
