The Passing of Trustee and Chair Emeritus David Stern

January 02, 2020

Columbia University is deeply saddened to learn of the death of former NBA commissioner David Stern.

A graduate of Columbia Law School, David served as chair of Columbia’s Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2005, at a time of great renewal and change. During his tenure, the University welcomed a new president, achieved unprecedented levels of financial stability, reinvigorated undergraduate education and strengthened ties with its neighbors.

David will, of course, be forever remembered for his transformative leadership of the NBA and his embrace of the league’s players and fans. He was passionately civic-minded and supported causes dedicated to families, the arts and social justice.

David was a man of uncommon judgment, integrity and brilliance. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
