This Grad Student Is Taking His Own Advice: 'Work Hard, Dream Big, and Be Ready'
For Gerardo Rios Garcia, who is set to graduate from SPS this month, the future is looking bright, and sustainable.
Since he arrived in New York from Mexico City to begin his graduate studies in sustainability at Columbia's School of Professional Studies, Gerardo Rios Garcia has been active both in and beyond the classroom—volunteering, interning, student teaching, and more. He is intent on making every minute count, both for himself and those around him.
When are you graduating from SPS, and what is your degree and program?
I'm in my final semester of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management, and set to graduate this month.
What drew you to sustainability management, and what was your path to pursuing graduate work at Columbia?
Sustainability has always been a passion for me—thinking about creating a positive impact on the world, improving the future for generations to come, and understanding the role our food systems play in climate change.
I first became interested in sustainability management after learning about the unsustainability of animal-based diets. So I majored in environmental management during college, and knew I wanted to build a career in sustainability. After two years in management consulting, I decided to focus on environmental challenges. I spent a lot of time saving and planning. Eventually, I hit the road—literally. I drove my Volkswagen bus all the way from Mexico City to New York, starting a new chapter here at Columbia.
What roles have you taken on at SPS?
I’ve been lucky to become very involved in the SPS community—working as a teaching assistant, a research assistant, an intern, being part of student government, organizing events, and volunteering. One of the most meaningful experiences has been serving as the elected DEIA Student Officer for the school.
This is a role where I get to work directly with students, faculty, and the broader community to make a tangible impact. Whether I’m representing diverse voices or ensuring everyone feels heard and included, it’s been a truly rewarding experience, which has challenged me to think like a leader and problem-solver.
What about your Fulbright scholarship?
Fulbright scholarships support international students pursuing advanced degrees, while also promoting cultural exchange. I was fortunate enough to receive a Fulbright in 2023, which covers about 50 percent of my tuition at Columbia. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and everything it has made possible.
How do you like studying in New York? What are some of your favorite urban activities?
I love studying in New York! The energy here is unmatched. There’s always something going on, from Broadway shows and concerts to art exhibitions and networking events. One of the best things about the city is its diversity: No matter how niche your interests, you’ll find a community here. I’ve made some great friends just by exploring what New York has to offer, and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.
Any recommendations for things to do beyond campus?
Definitely take advantage of all the events Columbia organizes. Many of them are free or heavily discounted—things that would otherwise cost a lot! Also, as a student, you can get discounts at museums, shows, and more. My advice: Don’t be shy about asking. There’s so much to do, and being in this city as a student means you get the inside scoop on some amazing opportunities.
What's some advice you would give to an incoming Columbia student?
Work hard, dream big, and be ready. It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity that hasn’t come yet than to miss out because you weren’t ready. At Columbia, opportunities will come: It’s all about making sure you’re in a position to seize them when they do.
Any hobbies?
I’m all about staying active and being outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, bouldering, or playing soccer, I’m in my element when I’m moving. I also enjoy baking: It’s my way of relaxing and being creative. And, of course, spending time with my two golden retrievers is always a highlight of my day.
What are your plans post-graduation?
I’m still figuring out what’s next, and I’m excited about the possibilities—consulting, research, or something entirely new. I’m keeping an open mind, and looking forward to whatever comes my way.
