Extracurriculars is a new series within Columbia News dedicated to showcasing the many clubs and organizations that exist at Columbia University.

The Columbia University Ice Hockey Club is a team sport that competes in the North American Collegiate Hockey League (NACHL), facing teams from across the tri-state area. The NACHL is a competitive, full-contact league, and the team plays a 20- to 30-game regular season schedule, which includes both in-conference and out-of-conference matchups. The season concludes with conference playoffs in the spring and the opportunity to qualify for the league’s national tournament.

Who Can Join

The team welcomes players of all skill levels and playing backgrounds, including both undergraduate and graduate students.

Why You Should Join

“Everything is run by the students,” said club secretary and School of General Studies student Jack O’Sullivan. “We do all the scheduling, the busing, all of it. It’s basically like everyone has a piece of the pie of how this works out, and everyone can play. Anyone is welcome to put on a pair of skates, get on the ice, and have some fun. Whether you’re a practice player or a game player, it’s all about getting out there and having a blast.”

Time Commitment

“We have games on the weekends, usually two to three games, and then there’s practice one or two nights a week,” said O’Sullivan.

The Team Spirit

“We are individuals who aren’t thinking about ourselves,” said O’Sullivan. “It’s bigger than the individuals. It’s all about the team. And it’s great everyone has that mindset. Everyone is a team player.”
