George Chauncey, the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History, will present his lecture, "Rethinking the Closet: New York Queer Life before Stonewall," on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. at the East Gallery, Maison Française.

Chauncey, a historian of New York City’s post-war gay culture and politics, is the author of the trailblazing book Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940, in which he debunks the myth that gay life existed only in the closet before the 1960s. He is also director of the Columbia Research Initiative on the Global History of Sexualities.

The event is part of the Just Societies Speaker Series, an initiative of Dean Fredrick Harris in the Division of Social Science and the Faculty of Arts & Sciences.
