Three Columbians Named AAAS Fellows

The American Association for the Advancement of Science honored them for scientific excellence and service to their communities.

Three Columbia faculty members were named honorary fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), one of the world’s largest general scientific societies.

The fellowship dates back to 1874. Election as a AAAS Fellow is a lifetime honor, and all fellows are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity.

“This year’s AAAS Fellows have demonstrated research excellence, made notable contributions to advance science, and delivered important services to their communities,” said Sudip S. Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science family of journals. “These Fellows and their accomplishments validate the importance of investing in science and technology for the benefit of all.”

The Columbia faculty who were recognized are:

George A. Bonanno, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Teachers College

For distinguished contributions to our understanding of the psychology of trauma and resilience;

Yiping W. Han, Professor of Microbial Sciences in Dental Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology

For distinguished contributions to the field of microbiology, particularly in understanding the role of Fusobacterium nucleatum in human disease;

Kevin Ochsner, Professor of Psychology

For distinguished contributions to social and affective neuroscience, particularly illuminating the neural processes associated with emotion regulation across varied domains.
