5 Things Every Columbia Grad Should Know About Commencement 2026

Columbia's biggest celebration of the year will take place on the Morningside Heights campus—here's everything graduates and their guests need to know before May 20.

Editor's note:

Unseasonable hot weather is expected on Commencement Day—come prepared with a water bottle and sunscreen. More details on this weather advisory.

Caps are being ordered, regalia is being pressed (we recommend it!), and after years of late nights, early mornings, study sessions, and friend hangs, Commencement—and, indeed, graduation week—is almost here.

On Wednesday, May 20, Columbia University will gather on the Morningside Heights campus to celebrate the Class of 2026 as degrees are conferred during Commencement. We want to make sure you're ready.

Whether you're a grad ready to throw your cap in the air or cheering from the audience, here are five things you need to know before the big day. Preparation is key.

1. Two Ceremonies, One Unforgettable Day

This year, University Commencement returns to the heart of Columbia's Morningside Heights campus. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 20, with two distinct ceremonies:

Can't make it in person? Both ceremonies will be available on a live webcast, so family and friends near and far can share in the moment.

Remember, University Commencement is different than your individual school graduation ceremony, where you'll walk the stage to the cheers of your classmates, friends, and family. Details about your school's Class Day will come directly from your school. University Commencement is where degrees are conferred en masse by order of the University President, but you won't walk the stage at this event.

2. Get Your Tickets and Get There Early

Friendly Commencement volunteers will be there to assist you and your family, including scanning your tickets to enter. Help them by arriving early with your ticket downloaded and ready to go! Photo courtesy Columbia Commencement.

All graduating students must register for e-tickets for themselves and their guests. Registration opens Monday, April 15, and closes on Wednesday, May 6.

If you are eligible to graduate, you will receive an email with Commencement ticket registration information. Guest e-tickets are required for everyone over the age of three. Here's what to know about guest ticket limits:

  • Undergraduate students may register up to four guest tickets.
  • Graduate students may register up to two guest tickets.

Think of it this way: a Columbia degree may be the most sought-after ticket in New York City, and Commencement Day is no exception.

Pro tips before you go:

  • Prepare to download or screenshot your ticket ahead of the event. Don't count on a strong signal with thousands of people on campus at once.
  • Arrive early, very early. Doors open two hours before each ceremony, but you can get in line before that. For the morning University Commencement—Graduate Ceremony, especially, early arrival is essential to guarantee you make it on time (for grads and guests).
  • All graduates enter at 120th Street. Plan your route accordingly.
  • Agree on a spot for where to meet your family and friends after the event! There will be a lot of people moving around at once.

Also, check your eligibility well before University Commencement day. Reach out to your school to confirm you're on track to graduate. If you haven't heard anything by early May, don't wait: contact your school directly.

3. How to Get There (Hint: Take the Train)

University Commencement means navigating a beautiful (but busy!) urban campus. Here's how to arrive smoothly:

  • By subway: The 1 train to 116th Street-Columbia University is the best bet for most people. It avoids the traffic headaches entirely.
  • By car: If you're driving, be aware that Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue will have permitted-parking-only lanes in effect to keep traffic moving, and parking garages fill up quickly (the University does not provide parking for Commencement).
  • ADA Shuttle Service: Free shuttles will loop around campus and transport guests who need assistance to the designated disability access gate on Amsterdam Avenue.

Whatever you do: have a plan before you arrive. The earlier you lock in your route, the smoother your morning or afternoon will be.

For disability services and accessibility resources, visit the Commencement accessibility page.

4. What to Bring and What to Leave Home

Commencement takes place outdoors (and takes place rain or shine!), which means comfort and preparation matter. Here's your packing checklist:

Bring:

  • Your e-ticket (download or screenshot it!)
  • A reusable water bottle: water refill stations will be available across campus.
  • The event is rain or shine, so prepare accordingly (an umbrella might be needed!).
  • Your phone for photos and video

Leave at home:

  • Bags and Gifts: Columbia enforces a no-bag policy similar to major stadium events to expedite entry. Travel light, and you'll get through the gates much faster.
    • Wallets and small clutches are allowed but subject to screening upon entry. Exceptions for ADA, nursing, and medically necessary items will be permitted following inspection. Any item requiring additional screening may delay entry.
    • These rules may also apply to other Commencement Week events.
  • Signs, balloons, and other items that obstruct guests' line-of-sight. These items will be collected and discarded at entry points.

5. Take Your Graduation Photos Early and Share Your Stories!
