Student Union Ratifies First Contract With the University

SWC-UAW announced that, out of a total of 2,150 votes cast, more than 97% voted in favor of ratification.

The Student Workers of Columbia-UAW (SWC-UAW) ratified today its first contract with the university. According to the SWC-UAW, out of a total of 2,150 votes cast, more than 97% voted in favor of ratification.

In a letter to the Columbia community announcing the news, Mary C. Boyce, the university provost and professor of mechanical engineering, wrote: "The agreement between the University and SWC-UAW represents one of the most comprehensive and generous contracts between a private university and students who assume significant pedagogical and research responsibilities as part of their academic training."

She added, "We look forward to working with the student leaders of SWC-UAW to enrich the vibrant academic environment that has always characterized Columbia. Our hope is that, together, we will find new opportunities to reaffirm our longstanding commitment to support our students, as well as recognize the important roles they play in the educational and research missions of this great institution."
